About the Program and Position:

The Enhanced Family Foster Care (EFFC) Program supports foster youth in the custody of the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) in New York City. Our EFFC program serves 137 youth ages 0-21+. It supports them with a multidisciplinary team that includes a Case Planner, NYC Comprehensive Health Services Team, Psychiatrist, Behavioral Support Specialist, Family Advocate, Case Aide, Family Team Conferencing Coordinator, Education Workforce Specialist, Employment/Internship and Housing Specialist, Fair Futures Coach, Foster Home Recruiter and Licensor and Clinician. Our therapeutic approach to foster care includes direct access to Clinicians and foster parents trained at a treatment foster care level implementing the ARC Framework. This makes a difference because our team approach provides a space for healing while providing skill-building and future-focused planning for youth in our care.

Under the supervision of the Director of Fair Futures, the Education Specialist will collaborate with youth, parents, foster parents, the treatment team, tutors and schools/post-secondary institutions to ensure that the educational needs of children are being met. This position will facilitate the timely enrollment of youth in Elementary/ Middle school, support enrollment in bussing, monitor and track school records including report cards, and IEPs. Additionally, the Educational Specialist will work in conjunction with families to provide educational advocacy, monitor academic performance, aid in the school selection process, and assist in referrals for tutoring or extracurricular activities.

Assigned to monitor preschool, elementary & middle school level youth to ensure timely enrollment in school, enrollment in bussing, monitor and track school records including report cards, and IEPs.

Maintain regularly communication with the legal guardian or educational surrogate to discuss the youth's educational needs, including IEP, 504 Plan services as needed

Collect, review, and track NYC DOE data on attendance, grades/ promotion status, school enrollment, and transcripts to support with academic challenges & identify supports

Responsible for enrolling youth to available tutoring slots, monitoring attendance, progress, and elevating any support needed

Facilitating Preparing Young Adulthood Meetings with the Fair Future Coaches to deliver educational related information to youth

Provide individualized assistance to youth with the high school selection process

Responsible for youth’s Summer Rising enrollment on a yearly basis

Provide assistance to refer youth to local District’s Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE)

Support school transfers to ensure the proper steps to change schools are taken

Collaborate with the assigned Treatment Team, foster parents, birth parents/caregivers, and school providers to address educational concerns.

Play an active role in Family Team Conferences (FTC’s), Interdisciplinary Treatment Team (ITT), and other meetings

Responsible for partnering with community resources / organizations to provide more opportunities for youth and strengthen their academic progress

Required to submit monthly progress notes in Care4 for each assigned middle school level youth, reflecting educational progress, challenges, and interventions

Required to submit a monthly progress notes in Connections for all assigned youth

Required to ensure Connection reflects the most updated educational information for the academic year

Perform other related duties as requested by immediate supervisor, Vice President of Supportive Services, Senior Vice President, and Associate CEO

Schedule: Exempt

Regular hours entail a flexible schedule with 40 hours per week.

Evenings, weekends and on-call required.

Experience and Skills:

Bachelor's degree with relevant experience in education, academic, or related field required

Two years of documented relevant experience required

Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace and willing to learn the use of databases used for tracking and documentation.

Experience with NYC public school system highly preferred

Excellent communication and organizational skills and ability to work in a flexible team environment

Ability to work well with people from many cultures including recent immigrants, non-English speakers, and LGBTQIA+ youth

Valid NYS Driver’s License preferred

Ability to travel within the five boroughs

Physical Requirements:

Word processing: Including responding to e-mails, composing letters, completing computerized documentation, transcribing minutes for meetings, etc.: This involves sitting at a computer for several hours a day

Completing paperwork - including copying and stapling

Stand for several hours

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds

Sit/ride in vehicles and/or public transportation for lengthy periods of time

Walk up/down stairs

Walk several blocks to destination
