Quick answer: To correct an age-check entry on Steam, enter your real date of birth when the store asks for it. Do not look for a birthday editor under Edit Profile: that is not a reliable way to change a store age check. A content warning, store preference, parental control, and regional age-verification requirement can each need a different solution.

This guide helps you identify the screen you are seeing, correct an accidental entry, and find the right official settings. Steam can show different prompts by region, account state, and interface version, so follow the instructions shown in your own account. Updated October 21, 2026.

Start here: what do you mean by “age on Steam”?

People use this phrase for several separate things. You may mean the date entered on a game’s store page, the content warnings displayed while browsing, restrictions set by a parent, or the number of years an account has existed. These are different features. Changing one does not automatically change the others.

First read the exact message. A page asking you to select a day, month, and year is an age gate. A notice that your preferences hide a game points toward store settings. A message about family permissions belongs with the adult managing your Steam Family. A request to complete regional age verification needs the official verification process.

How to correct a Steam age-check entry

1. Open the game’s official store page. Use the Steam application or store.steampowered.com in your browser. Check that you are on the correct website before entering account information. If an outside search result opened a warning page, read that warning before continuing.

2. Check whether the date fields are editable. Where a date-of-birth form appears, select your actual day, month, and year. Review all three fields before submitting. A prefilled year or month can be easy to overlook, especially on a small screen.

3. Submit the form using the button shown. Steam may label it View Page or use another confirmation label. If you meet the requirements and the page opens, the immediate age-check problem is resolved. You have not necessarily updated a permanent birthday field on your public profile.

4. If you already submitted the wrong date, reopen the page. Try returning to the store and loading the game again. If the date controls reappear, enter the correct details. If the page instead reports that you cannot access the content, note the exact message before changing any other settings.

5. If the controls do not return, compare the browser and client. Opening the same official page in a current web browser can help identify whether the problem is limited to one browsing session. This is a diagnostic check. It does not change your eligibility, family permissions, or any regional verification requirement.

6. Contact Steam Support if the issue persists. Explain that you entered incorrect information by accident and describe the screen you now see. Include the game URL, your device, and whether the issue occurs in the client, browser, or both. Support can help identify which account or access process applies.

Why Edit Profile is not the right starting point

Older guides sometimes describe a Personal Information section with an editable birthday. Do not assume that such instructions match Steam’s current interface. The profile editor is used for public profile information and presentation. It should not be treated as a universal control for age gates or eligibility.

Likewise, changing your profile name, biography, avatar, or displayed location does not establish that you meet a game’s age requirements. If a tutorial sends you through several profile menus without showing the same setting you see on your screen, stop and return to the actual warning or verification page.

Store preferences and mature-content warnings

Steam gives signed-in users controls over the kinds of content shown or warned about in the store. If a notice says a game is hidden by your preferences, review the official Steam Store Preferences page. Read the category descriptions and choose settings appropriate for you.

A preference controls how the store presents content. It is not proof of age, and changing a preference does not guarantee that every game becomes accessible. Store availability, parental controls, account restrictions, and regional processes can still apply separately.

If you use more than one Steam account, make sure you are signed into the intended one before reviewing preferences. Changing a setting on a different account will not fix the experience in your usual account. After saving an available setting, reopen the affected store page and check whether the message changes.

Repeated prompts, cookies, and browser sessions

Valve’s cookie information identifies age-gate cookies used when a visitor completes an age gate. This helps explain why browsing state can matter. A prompt appearing again is not, by itself, evidence that your account birthday has changed.

If a browser appears stuck on an incorrect entry, first reload the page and check that cookies are allowed for Steam. For a problem isolated to that browser, clearing Steam-specific site data can be a troubleshooting step. It may sign you out and reset other local preferences. Make sure you can sign back in and complete Steam Guard before doing it.

Avoid clearing all browser data as your first step. Removing data from unrelated sites adds work without helping identify the Steam issue. After clearing only the relevant site data, revisit the official store and enter truthful information if the form is shown again.

Cookie troubleshooting does not override regional age assurance or a parent’s restrictions. There is also no need to edit cookie values, install a script, or use an extension to pretend to be a different age. If the message remains after normal troubleshooting, use Steam Support instead of repeating the same reset.

Steam Families and parental controls

If an account is managed as a child in Steam Families, an adult family member should review its permissions. Valve’s Steam Families guide explains the adult and child roles and the available parental controls. A store age-check entry does not replace these permissions.

Ask the adult managing the family to review the particular game or feature you want to use. Describe the access message rather than assuming your birthday is wrong. A game-access decision and a store-content preference can look similar from the child account, but they belong to different controls.

Valve’s older Family View help now points users toward Steam Families parental controls. This matters because old instructions about a Family View PIN may not match the current setup. Follow the official instructions for the family system your account actually uses, and do not share another person’s credentials to change permissions.

Regional age verification: check the official guidance

Some regions use an additional age-assurance process for particular content. For example, Steam publishes a dedicated UK age-assurance help page. If Steam presents a regional verification requirement, read the current official instructions that apply to your account.

A date entered on a store warning is not necessarily enough to satisfy a separate verification process. Complete only the process offered inside Steam’s official service. If a method fails or is unavailable to you, ask Steam Support which supported options apply. Do not assume guidance for a different country will work for your account.

Do not buy an account, submit someone else’s payment details, or use a third-party “age reset” service to address this issue. These actions do not provide a dependable account correction. They can also leave you with an account you cannot recover or a payment method you are not authorized to use.

Things that will not fix the underlying problem

Buying a game or gift card: A purchase is not a general age-reset tool. Only buy a game after checking that your account can access it and that the listing matches your region and intended platform. A Steam key also needs the correct activation region and product edition.

Changing your download region: This setting is intended for download behavior. It should not be used as a birthday editor. A missing game page and a slow download are separate problems, even when both happen inside the Steam client.

Reinstalling every game: A store prompt is not normally a reason to remove your game library. Start with the page, session, preferences, or family setting involved. Reinstallation can take a long time and does not establish your age.

Following instructions for another platform: Epic Games, console accounts, and individual game accounts have their own account processes. Updating information there does not automatically update Steam. Identify which company displays the message before opening a support ticket.

When to contact Steam Support

Contact support if you cannot correct an accidental entry, the verification process fails, or the account displays a restriction you do not understand. Start at help.steampowered.com and sign in through the official flow. Select the category that best matches the account or store issue.

Prepare a short report: the affected store URL, the exact error text, the device and browser used, and the steps already attempted. State whether the issue affects one game or several. A screenshot can help, but hide unrelated personal information. Never place your password, Steam Guard code, recovery code, or complete card details in a public discussion.

If the account is part of a Steam Family, mention that fact. If the screen explicitly identifies a country-specific verification process, mention the wording. These details help separate a session problem from a preference, family permission, or verification requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my date of birth under Edit Profile?
Do not rely on that instruction. For a store age gate, use the actual date fields presented by the store. For an account-level problem or a separate verification requirement, follow Steam’s official support process.

Why does Steam ask for my age again?
Age checks and content warnings can be shown separately from your public profile. Browsing state, preferences, region, and the page you open can affect what you see. A repeated prompt alone does not establish an account error.

Does clearing cookies change my account age?
No. Clearing local site data is a browser troubleshooting step. It does not change the date an account was created, remove family permissions, or complete a separate verification requirement.

Can I permanently remove every age warning?
Do not expect one setting to remove every prompt. Review eligible store preferences, but required access checks can still apply. Follow the prompt shown for the particular content and region.

Should I create another account?
Start by diagnosing the existing account. A new account is not a dependable correction for a session problem or verification requirement, and your existing purchases remain associated with the account that owns them.

How old is my Steam account?
The age of an account means how long it has existed. That is different from your personal age or the birth date entered on a game’s age-check screen. This guide addresses access prompts rather than changing account history.

Optional: compare PC game offers after resolving access

If you are ready to shop, compare the edition, activation platform, region, and refund conditions before paying. A low price does not help if a key is for the wrong region or platform. Resolve any access problem first; buying a key will not correct it.
