Which PC version works with Minecraft mobile?

“PC Minecraft” can mean different games. The important label is the edition, not whether someone uses a keyboard. Android and iOS use Bedrock. On a supported Windows computer, choose Minecraft for Windows in the launcher. If the launcher says Minecraft: Java Edition, you are opening a different multiplayer ecosystem.

Pocket Edition is an older name many readers still use for mobile Minecraft. Avoid instructions written for discontinued releases or screenshots with menus you cannot find. Current retail mobile Minecraft belongs to Bedrock, but that does not mean every old Pocket Edition build can connect to today’s Windows game.

How to play Minecraft mobile and PC together online

Start with a small new world to check that both players can connect. Once that works, open the world you actually want to use. Menu wording can change with updates, but the account, world and invitation checks remain the same.

1. Update both games. Install the regular release on the phone and Windows computer. A Preview or beta install may not connect to the regular release.
2. Open Bedrock on Windows. Select Minecraft for Windows rather than Java Edition. Installing the launcher alone does not establish game ownership.
3. Sign in with the correct Microsoft accounts. For online friend play, each player should use their own account and have the required access to the game on their device.
4. Add the other player’s gamertag. Use Minecraft’s friend tools. Check spelling carefully and confirm the correct account instead of guessing from an email address.
5. Enable multiplayer for the host world. Review the world’s multiplayer settings and choose an appropriate friends access setting. The host can be on mobile or PC.
6. Open the world and invite your friend. The joining player can check Friends or accept the invitation. Both players must be online for a normal hosted session.
7. Test movement and building. Confirm that you are in the same world. If one player cannot build, check their world permissions before blaming the connection.

You do not have to share a Wi-Fi network for online friend play. You do need a usable internet connection and account settings that allow multiplayer. A child’s account may need its family organizer to review multiplayer and friend permissions through the official account controls.

For an ordinary hosted world, the host must keep that world open. If the host closes Minecraft or disconnects, the other player may lose access. That behavior is different from a paid Realm or an independently running server.

How to play on the same Wi-Fi network

LAN play is useful when both players are at home. Connect the phone and Windows computer to the same local network, open a Bedrock world on the host, and enable multiplayer and LAN visibility where those options appear. Check the joining device’s Friends or available local games list for the host.

The computer may use Ethernet while the phone uses Wi-Fi, provided both are on the same local network and the router allows devices to communicate. A guest network can isolate devices even when the Wi-Fi name looks familiar. Hotel, school and public networks may also block local discovery.

Do not follow Java’s “Direct Connect” instructions for a mobile Bedrock world. That is a different connection path. Adding an address and port is appropriate when you intentionally have a compatible Bedrock server to join, not a universal replacement for local world discovery.

If the world does not appear, confirm LAN visibility, check whether either device is on guest Wi-Fi, and review Minecraft’s local-network permission on the phone where the operating system provides it. On Windows, allow the legitimate game through the firewall for the appropriate trusted network. Do not switch off the firewall or expose router ports just to troubleshoot a simple LAN session.

Mobile cannot join PC? Check these causes first

Change one thing at a time. Write down the exact error and note which device hosts the world. A missing invitation is a different problem from a connection timeout, and neither proves you need a new game key.

Try restarting Minecraft on both devices after an update. Verify that each player is signed into the account they intended to use. If only one old world fails while a fresh world works, review that world’s settings and add-ons. Make a backup before removing content from a valued world.

A slow phone or a demanding world can make a successful connection feel broken. Lower render distance, close unnecessary apps and test a smaller world. Touch controls and mouse controls differ, but both players can build and explore when their world permissions allow it. The old claim that only PC players can create or edit worlds is incorrect.

Can mobile join Java using Geyser?

Geyser is a third-party bridge that allows Bedrock clients to connect to a configured Java server. It is an advanced alternative for a group that specifically needs a Java server, not built-in Java-to-mobile cross-play.

The server administrator must install and maintain an appropriate setup. Supported versions, authentication and plugins matter. Do not assume a Java Realm, any Java LAN world or every heavily modded server becomes compatible just by typing its address into the phone.

Ask the administrator whether Bedrock players are supported, what address and port to use, and what account access is required. Follow the project’s documentation rather than an unfamiliar download promising one-click universal cross-play. If you simply want to build together, matching Bedrock editions is easier to explain and maintain.

Do you need Realms, Game Pass or a new license?

Separate game access from hosting. A normal friend-hosted world does not require buying a Realm. A Bedrock Realm can be useful when the group wants the shared world available without one friend leaving their own device running. It is an optional paid hosting arrangement, and the owner should review current plan limits and terms.

Game Pass is another separate question: subscription access and owning the game are different ways to obtain access on an eligible platform. Do not buy a subscription merely because a friend uses a different device. See whether PC Minecraft requires Game Pass and how device licenses differ before spending.

A mobile purchase does not automatically provide a Windows game license. Conversely, a PC code is not an Android or iPhone app-store purchase. First check what you already own, the account that owns it and the device on which you want to play.
