Build your first chest with eight planks

To build a chest in Minecraft, open a crafting table and fill the eight outside slots with wooden planks. Leave the center empty, then take the chest from the output slot.

This guide explains how to build a chest in Minecraft, place it, store items, and join two chests into a larger container. Start with a regular chest: you do not need iron, stone, a paid add-on, or a special tool to craft one.

Quick checklist
  • Workstation: a crafting table with a 3×3 grid.
  • Ingredients: eight wooden planks.
  • Pattern: planks around the edge; center empty.
  • Result: one regular chest.

1. Gather wood and make planks

Find a tree and collect its logs. Put a log into a crafting slot to turn it into planks. For a straightforward starter recipe, use ordinary oak logs: two logs provide the eight oak planks needed for one chest.

If you do not already have a crafting table, collect a third oak log. Twelve planks cover both projects: four for the table and eight for the chest. Open your inventory, fill the four slots of the small 2×2 crafting grid with planks, and take the crafting table. Place that table on the ground.

Do not put unprocessed logs into the chest pattern. Logs and planks are different ingredients. Using one familiar plank type for your first attempt makes it easier to see whether every required slot is filled.

2. Arrange the chest crafting recipe

Use the placed crafting table to open its 3×3 crafting grid. Add one plank to every position except the middle. The table below shows the recipe; each “Plank” cell means one wooden plank.

Take the chest from the result slot and move it into your inventory or hotbar. If you use the recipe book instead, search for “chest” while the crafting table is open, select the regular chest recipe, and collect the result.

Why the small grid does not work

The inventory’s 2×2 grid can make your crafting table, but the chest’s ring-shaped recipe needs a 3×3 grid. Open the table you placed in the world before arranging the eight planks.

3. Place and open the chest

Select the chest in your hotbar, aim at the surface where you want it, and use the place/interact control. On a default keyboard-and-mouse setup, placing and opening normally use the right mouse button. Controller and touch layouts can vary, so follow the on-screen prompt or your control settings.

Leave the space immediately above the chest clear when building your first storage corner. A solid block directly above it can stop it opening. Put it somewhere easy to reach near your crafting table, with enough floor space to stand in front of it.

Open the chest and move items between your inventory and its storage slots. The chest area and your personal inventory are separate parts of the screen. Close the interface when finished; the stored items remain in the chest.

4. Make a double chest for more storage

Craft a second regular chest with another eight planks. Place it next to the first chest so they connect along the side. In a simple setup, stand in front of the first chest and place the second immediately to its left or right, facing the same direction.

You do not upgrade a chest by filling the middle of the crafting recipe. A double chest comes from joining two regular chests in the world. If they do not connect, check their orientation, use two regular chests, and try placing them again in an open area.

Chest not crafting or opening? Check these fixes

  • No crafting result: open a crafting table, use planks rather than logs, fill all eight outer slots, and empty the center slot.
  • Recipe not visible: check recipe-book search and filters, or place the ingredients manually.
  • Chest will not open: clear the block directly above it. A sitting cat can also interfere with opening; move the cat away.
  • Unexpected recipe or storage behavior: mods, add-ons, and server rules can change vanilla behavior. Test in a separate unmodified world before changing your main setup.
  • You attack instead of interacting: check your input bindings and use the place/use action, rather than the attack action.

Do not delete a world or reinstall Minecraft to fix a crafting pattern. Work through the ingredients and grid first; these are the most useful checks for a beginner.

Organize a starter storage corner

Start with a few clear categories: building blocks, food and farming, tools and equipment, and mining supplies. Put the items you use often closest to your crafting table. Keep some food and basic tools available for your next trip instead of emptying everything into storage without a plan.

Before breaking a loaded chest to move it, empty it into your inventory or another container. Breaking a regular chest drops its stored items into the world; it does not pack the contents inside the chest item. Move valuable items carefully and make a backup before experimenting with a large storage rebuild.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need iron to build a regular chest?

No. The regular chest recipe uses eight wooden planks at a crafting table. Its visible latch is not an extra ingredient.

Can I make a chest without a crafting table?

You cannot use the small 2×2 inventory grid for this recipe. In survival crafting, use a crafting table’s 3×3 grid. Finding an existing chest is a separate way to obtain one.

Does the recipe work in Java and Bedrock?

The standard regular chest recipe uses eight planks around an empty center in both editions. Interface prompts and input controls differ by platform.

Is a chest the same as a shulker box?

No. A regular chest drops its contents when broken. Do not assume it will carry packed items the way a shulker box does.
