How to Block With a Sword in Minecraft: Java & Bedrock

Sword blocking depends on your edition

In Java Edition 1.8.9, hold a sword and hold the right mouse button to block. In modern vanilla Java and Bedrock, use a shield for defense while carrying your sword.

If you searched for how to block with a sword in Minecraft after watching an older PvP video, the missing animation can be confusing. The key detail is the game version: a tutorial recorded with old Java combat does not describe modern vanilla combat.

Start here
  • Old Java, such as 1.8.9: select your sword, then hold the Use Item control; by default, that is right-click.
  • Modern Java: equip a shield in your off-hand and hold Use Item while holding your sword.
  • Bedrock on PC, console or mobile: equip a shield and sneak/crouch to raise it.
  • Multiplayer: server plugins can change combat. Check the server’s supported versions and rules.

Optional PC setup upgrade

Your existing mouse can block and attack. If you are already replacing it, compare a comfortable gaming mouse with reliable left and right buttons. Check operating-system compatibility, size, seller and the checkout total.

Can you still block with a sword?

Yes in older Java versions that include sword blocking, such as Java 1.8.9. No in standard modern Java or Bedrock gameplay: the sword is your weapon, and a shield handles blocking. Do not expect a different mouse, controller or enchantment to restore the old mechanic.

Mojang introduced shields with the 2016 Combat Update. Java’s transition from sword blocking to shields happened in version 1.9. This is why a 1.8.9 PvP clip can show a sword-block animation that your modern single-player world does not have.

How to block with a sword in Minecraft Java 1.8.9

  1. Check your version. Confirm you are actually using Java 1.8.9 or another compatible older version, rather than simply playing on a server described as having old combat.
  2. Select a sword. Put it in your hotbar and switch to that slot.
  3. Hold the Use Item button. With default PC bindings, hold the right mouse button. Your character raises the sword into a blocking pose.
  4. Release to stop blocking. Use the attack button separately when you want to strike.

Old sword blocking reduces damage from applicable attacks; it is not complete protection against every source of damage. Do not treat the animation as immunity, and do not assume an opponent will be stunned after hitting your sword.

Keep old versions separate

If you experiment with an older Java installation, use a separate game directory and a separate test world. Back up your saves. Opening a newer world in an older version can damage or remove content.

How to block while holding a sword in modern Java

You can carry a sword and defend at the same time by pairing it with a shield. The shield blocks; the sword itself does not.

  1. Craft or obtain a shield.
  2. Open your inventory and place the shield in the off-hand slot.
  3. Put a sword in your main hand.
  4. Face the incoming attack and hold Use Item, normally the right mouse button.
  5. Release the button when you want to lower the shield and attack.

Raise the shield before the hit reaches you. It is directional protection, so turning away from the attacker leaves you exposed. Some damage bypasses a shield, and certain attacks can disable it. Keep room to retreat instead of relying on blocking alone.

If you left-click and swing your sword, you used Attack/Destroy rather than Use Item. Open the key-binding settings and check which button is assigned to each action, especially if you use a custom mouse profile.

How to block in Bedrock on console, PC and mobile

Bedrock uses a different shield control from Java: equip the shield, then sneak or crouch to raise it. You can keep a sword in your main hand and a shield in the off-hand. Watch the shield animation to confirm it is raised before testing against an enemy.

  • Keyboard and mouse: use your assigned sneak control. Check Settings if you have changed bindings.
  • Xbox, PlayStation or Switch controller: use your configured crouch/sneak button. Follow the control layout shown by your game rather than assuming a trigger will block.
  • Touch controls: use the sneak/crouch control for your selected touch layout. Button positions differ between control schemes.

Bedrock is the edition used on modern consoles and mobile devices. Advice about holding right-click with a sword in Java 1.8.9 does not transfer to those versions. There is no standard “Block Control” setting that gives a vanilla Bedrock sword the old Java blocking mechanic.

Shield crafting recipe: six planks and one iron ingot

Use a crafting table’s 3×3 grid. Place the iron ingot at the top center, planks on both sides of it, three planks across the middle row, and one plank in the bottom center.

Move the shield from the result slot into your inventory, then equip it. You do not need diamonds or obsidian for this recipe. There is also no vanilla “block sword” recipe made by combining obsidian, iron and a diamond.

Why blocking is not working

What you seeWhat to check
Right-click does nothing with a swordIn modern Java, equip a shield; sword blocking was removed
Your sword swingsYou pressed Attack instead of Use Item
A Bedrock shield stays loweredEquip it and use sneak/crouch
You still take damageFace the attack, raise the shield earlier and consider whether that damage can be blocked

Only multiplayer behaves differentlyCheck server plugins and combat rules before changing your installation

What about Hypixel and block-hitting?

“Block-hitting” refers to techniques that combine attacks with the old sword-blocking action. Tutorials often demonstrate an older Java client. A server accepting newer clients does not guarantee that every client shows the same animation or uses the same controls.

For Hypixel or another PvP server, check its current supported-version guidance and the rules for the specific game mode. Follow its mod policy. Do not install an autoclicker or a combat mod just to imitate a video, and do not assume a cosmetic blocking animation changes how damage is calculated.

Practice the control before a difficult fight

Use a separate practice world and test one input at a time. First confirm your edition and version, then equip the correct item, raise it, and check that the animation matches your action. Learn to lower the shield, attack and move back into a defensive position without opening your inventory.

Frequently asked questions

When was sword blocking removed from Java?

Java Edition 1.9 replaced the old sword-blocking mechanic with shields as part of the Combat Update in 2016. Java 1.8.9 still has sword blocking.

Can I block with a diamond or netherite sword?

A diamond sword can block in an older Java version that supports the mechanic. In modern vanilla gameplay, neither a diamond sword nor a netherite sword replaces a shield. Netherite was introduced after sword blocking had been removed.

Is there a Block Enchantment?

There is no standard vanilla armor enchantment called Block that lets you raise a sword to block. A mod may introduce its own enchantments, but those are specific to that mod.

Can I use a sword and shield together?

Yes. Put the sword in your main hand and the shield in your off-hand. In Java, use the Use Item control to raise the shield. In Bedrock, sneak/crouch with the shield equipped.
