Obsidian is useful, but a wrong tool or an exposed lava pocket can turn a short mining trip into a setback. Follow the steps below to collect it, understand common mistakes and choose a practical plan for your first portal.

What does breaking obsidian actually mean?

Breaking a block and collecting its item are different results. In Survival, an unsuitable tool can eventually remove obsidian, but you lose the block instead of putting it in your inventory. For a portal, an enchanting table or another build, that is usually the wrong outcome. Start by deciding whether you need the item or simply want an obstruction gone.

Use a diamond or netherite pickaxe when you want to keep the obsidian. Wood, stone, iron and gold are not substitutes for that harvesting requirement. A high enchantment level on an unsuitable pickaxe does not turn it into the correct tool. Likewise, buying a mouse or another game copy cannot change the block’s harvesting rules.

This guide describes ordinary vanilla Survival play. Creative mode, commands, custom servers, mods and add-ons can behave differently. If a server changes block drops or protects buildings, ask about those rules before experimenting. Do not assume that a technique shown in a modified video applies to your world.

How to mine obsidian safely, step by step

First, prepare a diamond or netherite pickaxe with enough durability. Bring ordinary building blocks, food and a water bucket when working in the Overworld. Clear space in your inventory so you can recognize the collected blocks. Leave valuables at your base if you are still learning to work around lava.

Second, inspect the mining position. Stand on solid ground beside the block rather than directly over it. Obsidian often covers lava, so removing the surface can open a dangerous hole. Look at nearby edges and choose an exit route before you start. A small platform is usually more useful than rushing into the middle of a pool.

Third, use water carefully in the Overworld to cover exposed lava and help control the immediate work area. Place it from a secure position where you can see the flow. Water placement is not a guarantee that every hidden pocket becomes safe. Keep checking what appears beneath each block and do not step into a newly opened gap.

Fourth, equip the correct pickaxe and hold the normal mine control while keeping the crosshair on one block. On a standard keyboard-and-mouse setup, this is the attack/destroy control. On a controller or touchscreen, use your configured mining input. Repeatedly releasing the control or shifting to another target interrupts your progress.

Finally, let the block finish breaking, collect the item and check your inventory. Confirm that your obsidian count increased before mining a large batch. If the item disappeared into lava or nothing dropped, pause and diagnose the cause. Fix the position, tool or inventory problem before sacrificing more blocks.

Can an iron pickaxe break obsidian?

An iron pickaxe can eventually break the block in ordinary Survival, but it will not drop obsidian. That distinction is why a simple yes-or-no answer can mislead beginners. If your goal is collecting obsidian, the practical answer is to switch to diamond or netherite before mining.

Do not waste an enchanted iron pickaxe hoping that Efficiency changes the drop requirement. Efficiency affects mining speed; it does not make iron a valid harvesting tier for obsidian. The same problem applies to other unsuitable tools. A faster animation or visible cracking does not prove that you will receive the item.

If you have only iron tools, work toward a diamond pickaxe or obtain obsidian through appropriate loot or bartering opportunities instead. You may also build a portal by casting its frame in place. That is a separate technique for making the structure, rather than collecting obsidian with an iron pickaxe.

Does TNT break obsidian in Minecraft?

Ordinary TNT explosions do not destroy obsidian in vanilla Minecraft. Creeper explosions are also not a normal solution. Obsidian’s strong blast resistance is one reason players use it around structures where explosion protection matters. Placing several TNT blocks against the surface does not make this a useful beginner mining method.

Explosions can still damage the surrounding area, expose lava and destroy other useful blocks. An unsuccessful TNT experiment can therefore make your mining site much harder to navigate. Use a suitable pickaxe and a controlled work area when you want the obsidian item.

Special cases such as Wither behavior, commands or modified explosions should not be confused with ordinary TNT mining. They have different risks and rules, and they are unnecessary for a small Survival collection. For this guide, the reliable recommendation is manual mining with diamond or netherite.

How to mine obsidian faster

Begin with a suitable pickaxe, then improve its speed. Efficiency is the relevant enchantment for faster mining. A netherite pickaxe is another suitable tool, but you do not need to postpone a small collection until you own one: diamond already meets the drop requirement.

Haste from a properly configured beacon can help with larger mining jobs. That setup takes additional resources, so it may make little sense for a beginner gathering a few blocks. Prioritize a good tool and a safe position first. Avoid treating advanced beacon setups as a requirement for your first portal.

Mining conditions also matter. Working underwater, mining while airborne or suffering a negative effect can make progress feel much slower. Stand on a stable surface and inspect active effects before assuming the tool is broken. Moving the crosshair off the target also resets your attempt.

Fortune is not an obsidian multiplier. Do not expect several obsidian items from one block just because a pickaxe has Fortune. Silk Touch is not needed to collect ordinary obsidian with the correct harvesting tool. Choose your equipment for speed and durability, while keeping the basic tool requirement in mind.

Where to find or make obsidian

A common early source is a place where water meets a lava source in the Overworld. You can also encounter obsidian around ruined portals and in other generated structures. It is not a block found only in the Nether, and you do not need to travel there before making your first portal.

To make obsidian, arrange for water to contact a lava source block. Source lava and flowing lava are not interchangeable for this purpose. If you keep getting cobblestone, inspect the fluid arrangement rather than blaming your pickaxe. Work on one controlled example before pouring water across a larger area.

Water buckets do not function normally for placing water in the Nether, so do not carry an Overworld water-mining plan into that dimension unchanged. In the Nether, use secure footing and suitable equipment, and pay particular attention to nearby lava and hostile mobs. For a first collection, an accessible Overworld site is often easier to manage.

Loot and piglin bartering can provide alternative ways to obtain obsidian. The available structures, outcomes and effort differ, so they are not guaranteed replacements for mining. If you already have a diamond pickaxe and a safe lava pool, straightforward mining is usually easier to understand than searching for a particular loot result.

Building a Nether portal without mining its blocks

If your only goal is reaching the Nether, you can cast a portal frame in place using lava sources and water in the Overworld. This avoids the need to pick up every obsidian block first. It does not make an iron pickaxe capable of harvesting obsidian.

Plan a vertical rectangular frame before placing fluids. A minimum portal uses ten obsidian blocks when the corners are omitted. A complete small frame with all corners uses fourteen. Keep the inner opening clear and use ordinary obsidian for the frame; crying obsidian is a different block.

Casting is easier when you have a stable mold and know where each source will go. Work slowly, collect misplaced fluids when possible and keep an escape path. A wrong placement may leave a solid block you cannot conveniently collect without the proper pickaxe.

Flint and steel is used to light the finished portal, not to mine its obsidian. If a portal will not activate, inspect the frame and opening first. Buying an add-on or another edition is not a necessary troubleshooting step for an incorrectly shaped frame.

Crying obsidian and ordinary obsidian

Crying obsidian has visible purple details and is used differently from ordinary obsidian. Do not mix the two when building a Nether portal. Finding a ruined portal does not mean that every dark purple block in the structure can be reused as working portal-frame material.

Use a diamond or netherite pickaxe if you want to collect crying obsidian as an item. A stone pickaxe is not the correct harvesting tool. Inspect the block before mining and check its inventory name afterward if you are uncertain which type you collected.

Keep different building materials in separate inventory slots while planning the frame. That small organizational step prevents a frustrating search for an activation problem caused by the wrong block. Decorative similarity does not mean that two blocks have the same purpose.

Troubleshooting when obsidian will not mine or drop

If the block takes a long time, check the tool first and confirm that you are holding the mine control continuously. Keep the crosshair centered on the same target. Stand securely, inspect any active effects and move out of underwater conditions when practical.

If the block breaks but there is no item, confirm that you used diamond or netherite. Next, inspect the area for lava and look for the dropped item nearby without jumping into danger. A full inventory can also make collection less obvious. Clear a slot and verify the block count.

If a block reappears immediately, the problem may be server lag, permissions or spawn protection. Test another harmless block in an allowed area and ask the server owner about protected regions. Do not attempt to bypass another player’s build protection.

If your modpack behaves differently, check its documentation and any tool-tier changes. Record the edition, game version and modpack name before asking for help. A clear description of what happened is more useful than applying a vanilla fix repeatedly to a server with custom rules.

A practical collection plan for your first trip

Decide how many blocks you need before entering the cave. Ten ordinary obsidian blocks cover a cornerless minimum Nether portal. If you also want an enchanting table, plan that separately rather than using your entire stack on the frame. Leave a small margin for placement mistakes if gathering more is convenient.

Prepare the route home as carefully as the mining spot. Light the approach where appropriate, mark confusing passages and avoid leaving your return path behind moving water. A successful collection still becomes frustrating if you cannot find your base or lose the items on the way back.

Count your blocks after the first successful pickup, halfway through the job and before leaving. Watch tool durability instead of waiting for the pickaxe to break. If the site becomes unsafe, stop with a smaller collection. You can return with better supplies rather than forcing the entire trip to succeed at once.

Back at your build area, place the blocks deliberately. Recovering a misplaced obsidian block takes more time than correcting a dirt scaffold. A simple temporary outline helps you check the portal dimensions before committing the valuable blocks.

Frequently asked questions

What pickaxe do you need for obsidian?

Use a diamond or netherite pickaxe to collect the block in ordinary Survival. An iron pickaxe can remove it eventually, but does not give you the obsidian item.

Can you use TNT or a Creeper?

Ordinary TNT and Creeper explosions do not destroy obsidian in vanilla play. Use the appropriate pickaxe instead of risking damage to the surrounding area.

Do you need Silk Touch?

No. Ordinary obsidian drops with a suitable diamond or netherite pickaxe without Silk Touch. Fortune does not multiply its normal block drop.

Why did my mined obsidian disappear?

Check the tool, surrounding lava, inventory space and server rules. An unsuitable pickaxe produces no obsidian drop, while exposed lava can destroy a dropped item.

Can you build a portal with crying obsidian?

No. Use ordinary obsidian for the Nether portal frame. Crying obsidian has different uses and is not a substitute in that frame.

Will a premium mouse make mining faster?

A comfortable input device may suit your setup, but it does not change obsidian hardness or the required tool. Improve the in-game pickaxe, effects and mining conditions first.

Your next step

Equip a diamond or netherite pickaxe, secure the mining position and collect one block before starting a bigger batch. If camera control makes accurate targeting awkward, follow our Minecraft sensitivity guide. For a construction project afterward, see our Survival bridge-building guide.
